Once on a very big island, there lived a cat. He was a strange cat because he looked like a cat, but he acted like a dog. But, he was a very cute cat.

One day the cat heard that a very popular rat was looking for animals that were cute and liked to sing and dance. So the cat went to meet the rat.

The rat said that if the cat worked for him, many animals would see the cat was cute and was good at singing and dancing. So the cat went to work for the rat.

When the cat went to work for the rat, he met many different animals. He met monkeys, and squirrels, and bunnies, and even octopus.

The cat also met a pig at work. The cat liked the pig because he was a pig, but acted like a dog. Just like the cat was a cat, but acted like a dog. The pig was cute and good at singing and dancing like the cat too. So the cat and the pig became friends.

The cat also met a turtle at work. The turtle was not good at singing and dancing. The turtle was not cute. The cat did not like him.

The cat wondered why the turtle came to work for the rat. The turtle was not cute. The turtle did not smile. He did not have pretty hair. He did not make friends. The turtle sang and danced sometimes. But he was not good at it.

Most of the time, the turtle stayed in his shell and did not talk to the other animals. Sometimes, the cat thought he saw the turtle looking at him. But when the cat turned to look at the turtle, the turtle always went back in his shell.

“Why are you here?” the cat asked the turtle, “You aren’t cute. You can’t sing and dance. You are wrinkly, and slow, and not fun. Turtles should not work for the rat. Turtles can’t do what cats, and pigs, and monkeys, and other animals can do.”

The cat thought maybe the turtle would cry and run away. Then the cat wouldn’t have to look at the turtle not smiling any more. He wouldn’t have to see the turtle hiding in his shell and wonder why any more either.

But the turtle did not cry. He did not run away. He just looked at the cat with his dark brown eyes. It made the cat feel weird. He did not like it. He wanted the turtle to go away.

“Why don’t you talk?! Why are you here?!” the cat asked loudly, “What can turtles do?!”

“Turtles can fly.” the turtle answered quietly.

The cat looked at the turtle. The turtle was not joking. He was not trying to be funny. The cat decided the turtle must be crazy.

“Turtles can’t fly!” the cat said.

“They can.” The turtle said back.

“So show me then! Fly!” the cat said, getting mad.

“Turtles can’t just fly anytime.” the turtle said, “It has to be because of something very special.”

“What something very special?” the cat asked, “I don’t believe you! You’re lying!”

“I’m not lying.” the turtle said.

“Then I want to see you fly!” the cat yelled.

“Maybe you will see me fly.” the turtle answered, “Someday. If you wait and something very special happens.”

The cat did not like the turtle. The turtle was a liar, and crazy, and not cute. But the cat was worried about the turtle too. What if the turtle tried to fly, and found out he really couldn’t, and fell and cracked his shell? The cat was not a mean cat. He didn’t want the turtle to get hurt, even if the turtle was not cute. It did not mean the cat liked the turtle. The cat was just a nice cat.

So the cat became friends with the turtle. He told the turtle he wanted to maybe see him fly someday. But really he did it so the turtle wouldn’t be alone and try to fly, and crack his shell.

So the turtle and the cat became friends and played together. They sang and danced together. Sometimes, the pig would play with the cat and turtle too.

And slowly the turtle got just a little better at singing and dancing. Slowly the turtle got just a little less not cute. The cat decided it was because he was friends with the turtle. He had helped the turtle get just a little better at singing and dancing, and less not cute.

That made the cat happy. He was glad he helped the turtle. He was a nice cat.

The turtle never mentioned flying again after that first time. Soon, the cat forgot all about it.
