BRIT ED WESTWICK WENT AMERICAN TO PLAY GOSSIP GIRL'S RICHEST RAKE

November 25, 2007 -- Ed Westwick is nothing like Chuck Bass, the smirking, skirt-chasing New York City prep school kid he plays on "Gossip Girl."

For starters, the 20-year old hails from England - Hertfordshire, just north of London. It comes as a surprise because his American accent is spot-on, all without the help of a dialect coach.

"It was watching too much American TV as a kid that did it," Westwick jokes, native accent in full force. "I've just got the ears for it, I'm very fortunate in that respect, but living in New York helps as well. It becomes second nature after a while.

Westwick originally auditioned for the roles of Chuck Bass and Nate Archibald (played by Chace Crawford), using both English and American accents when producers were flirting with the idea of making one of the characters British. "There was an idea that maybe they wanted to change it up a little bit, stick an English guy in there," Westwick says.

In the end, the Yankee accent won out and Westwick took the role of Chuck.

A strangely appealing combination of sadistic, arrogant, cold and vulnerable, Chuck's the heir to an enormous fortune – daddy's a tycoon who owns the Palace Hotel, where Chuck lives. He's playboy with a flamboyant wardrobe, Machiavellian attitude and a questionable sexual ethics.

Take, for example, memorable Chuck scenes like his near success at forcing his way under the party dress of a naive young freshman girl. (If her brother hadn't rescued her at the last minute, he would have succeeded.)

"Everybody always asks, 'Are you like him?' " Westwick says. "It's quite a funny thing, I don't know what people expect me to say, 'Yeah, I'm a date rapist!' "

Still, there is an aspect of Chuck that Westwick, who's currently dating a non-actress from England, can relate to.

"We all know how to be bad when we want to be," he says. "Chuck's supposed to be 16 or 17 and at that age, you're going through things that effect the way you are with people and the way you see things.

"Chuck's a villain, but he's not an all out bad guy - that's no excuse to date-rape someone or anything like that - but he's still a picture that's being painted," he says.

If so, the canvas is filled with garish colors. "He's got this astronomical wealth, the keys to the city, and he can take whatever he wants and nobody bats an eyelid," Westwick says. "To have that kind of life, it's got to throw up some interesting issues."

Nothing that the soccer-playing, lead singer of the indie-rock band the Filthy Youth (you can their tunes on the group's MySpace page; they sound like a hyper version of the Libertines) knows about first-hand.

"I don't really come from that kind of side of society," says Westwick. "But, the world of pretty, mean and rich Upper East Side kids isn't completely a foreign concept for him either.

"We have our own version [in England]," he says. Posh neighborhoods such as "Chelsea, Kensington and Sloane Square are the Upper East Side of London. The kids that hang around Sloane Square are people who come from astronomical wealth."

Is he relieved, then, that he doesn't have to deal with that world in his private time?

"If you can say living with the money is worth living with the attitude and the problems that the guys and girls in 'Gossip Girl' have, then go for it," Westwick says. "I wouldn't want to lead the lives that we play because it can be a bit dramatic, but we'd all love to have a load of money, wouldn't we?"
